Graduations this week

Thursday 15 July will see a flurry of Arts and Social Sciences undergraduate, graduate and PhD students celebrate their formal graduations from the ANU.

Students from the Bachelor of Arts suite of undergraduate programs will dominate the Graduation Ceremony but the College will also acknowledge and celebrate the completion of numerous graduate students including the first graduate of the Master of Archaeological Science program, Shawn O’Donnell, and the first graduate of the Master of Islam in the Modern World, Penny Bowen.

Shawn was the first international student to enter the Master of Archaeological Science program in 2009 and completed his degree with personal research projects in Geographic Information Systems, Palaeobotany and Archaeobotany. Shawn will lead the roll-out of graduates from the inaugural M. Arch Science group who were flown to the Pilbara in 2009 for research-led field training in coastal geoarchaeology and Heritage management, generously supported by logistics and funding from BHP Billiton Iron Ore (BHP BIO) arranged through HEH Pty Ltd.

Penny is the first graduand of the Master of Islam in the Moder World program that was established at the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies (The Middle East and Central Asia) in 2009. Prior to this degree, Penny had completed a Graduate Diploma in Middle Eastern and Central Asian Studies at CAIS. She hopes to continue her study with a research project looking at small Islamic communities in Western countries.
